After a bit of a wait here is a new build. This one has a number of bug fixes, as usual, and a lot of work on the mechanics related to recruitment.
Various wizard tower upgrades and research items will now unlock regiments pulled from the cultures near the demesne of the wizard. These are randomly generated along with the world and they are now correctly matched with progression when building upgrades and researching.
The mechanics for calculating costs for recruiting and maintaining regiments have also had a lot of work, and these values are displayed when inspecting armies and in the recruitment interface. Regiment naming has been improved, and more cultural traits are taken into account generating the available regiment types.
Another change is that certain wizard research items that are important to progression and various strategies will now be prioritized when available research projects are generated. It is not fun to have to research random low-level things to clear a spot that will hopefully be filled with something essential – like Basic Warfare, which is needed to build Barracks.
So building an army to conquer the world or just lay waste to a random Halfling town will be easier and the player will be able to increase the power of regiments not only through magical research, but also through building upgrades that allow training of heavy infantry and cavalry of “normal” troops.
Resource sites (mines, lumbermills, farms, etc.) will now decay and disappear if left unused for too long.
Next up is a pass on follower mechanics. I am not too happy with the current micromanagement-intensive design, and I will change that to allow for more interesting gameplay with fewer turn-to-turn chores. Not going to do totally away with the randomly generated missions that appear, but generally followers should be assigned to a longer-term effort (research, governing a town, part of an army, espionage, etc.) as part of the player’s strategy, and not constantly have to be re-assigned to new tasks of a short duration. Then when a special opportunity for adventure appears the player will have to choose what on-going work has to be put on pause – or recruit more followers.
